The Arc of Evansville is a nonprofit organization in Evansville, Indiana, with the mission to connect people with opportunities and purpose.
We were founded in 1954 by a group of parents who were frustrated with the lack of services available in the community for their children with disabilities. The needs of people and their families have changed through the years. Supports provided by The Arc of Evansville have evolved over time to meet the needs of today for those served. Whether we’re nurturing children’s social skills, guiding teens into adulthood, or providing on-the-job training, our dedication to delivering the highest level of care remains steadfast.
With a focus on person-centered thinking, The Arc of Evansville is helping people with disabilities live lives of choice where each one spends their time in ways that are meaningful to them. Our eight programs provide opportunities for development, employment, and community connections, demonstrating our unwavering mission to connect people with opportunities and purpose. By fulfilling this mission, people served become integral parts of their community, rather than just being ‘in the community.’
What Is Person Centered Thinking
At The Arc of Evansville, person-centered practices mean putting the person-not the system at the heart of every decision. Too often, individuals with disabilities have been placed into rigid programs or services that prioritized convenience or compliance over personal goals, preferences, and dignity. These restrictive approaches left little room for independence, self-expression, or meaningful life choices. We are committed to doing things differently.
Person-centered practices focus on what matters to each individual: their strengths, aspirations, culture, and the supports they need to thrive. Instead of asking “What program do you fit into?”, we ask “What life do you want to live, and how can we support you in getting there?”
This approach means:
Listening deeply to each person’s voice-and when needed, those who know and love them best.
Respecting autonomy and dignity, no matter the level of support required.
Supporting risk and choice, because a full life includes both.
Challenging outdated systems that limit opportunity and inclusion.
Through person-centered practices, we aim to create a future where every person is seen, heard, and supported in living the life they choose.
