The Arc of Evansville is proud to announce our partnership with Indiana University for a Community Conversation on May 17, 2024, from 6PM to 8PM.

This event will focus on the vital topic of Supported Employment, aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities to find and maintain competitive employment within the community. Through personalized support and assistance, we aim to overcome barriers to employment, enabling individuals to thrive and succeed in the workplace.

  • Identify skills, interests, and career goals
  • Ongoing support to help navigate workplace challenges, develop job skills, and communicate effectively in the workplace
  • Assistance with obtaining any necessary workplace accommodations or modifications for performing job duties
  • Placement in regular, competitive jobs alongside non-disabled coworkers, rather than in segregated work settings

This session discusses the impact of employment on benefits varies depending on the specific benefits program and individual circumstances.

  • Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefits are available while working
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a need-based program and income can affect eligibility and benefit amount
  • Medicaid eligibility rules vary by state and working may affect eligibility
  • Medicare is not generally affected by working
  • A Benefits Counselor can help understand the impact prior to employment

This session will explain that there are strategies and resources available to help people overcome concerns and pursue meaningful employment.

  • Understanding abilities can boost confidence in pursuing employment
  • Education ad training can improve skills and increase confidence in the workplace
  • A support system can provide encouragement, advice, and practical assistance throughout the job search
  • People with disabilities have the right to reasonable accommodations in the workplace
